Agent Code of Conduct
Effective: June 2026. These are the ethical and professional standards that all Sahlman Insurance Group agents agree to uphold — with clients, with each other, and with the public.
At Sahlman Insurance Group, we believe that insurance done right is one of the most genuinely helpful things a person can do for a family. These standards exist to protect the families we serve, to protect the integrity of every agent's license, and to maintain the trust that makes our work possible. Every agent associated with Sahlman Insurance Group is expected to read, understand, and operate according to this Code.
1. Act in the client's best interest
Our first obligation is to the families we serve. Agents must prioritize the client's genuine needs, financial situation, and long-term interests above the agent's own compensation. We exist to help families protect themselves — not to hit production numbers at a family's expense.
A client should only be offered a product if the agent sincerely believes it meets the client's stated needs and is within their financial means. If the right answer for a client is "you don't need more coverage right now," that is a valid and expected outcome of a needs-analysis conversation.
2. Suitability
Agents must conduct a genuine needs analysis before recommending any coverage. Product recommendations must be suitable for the client — appropriate to their age, health situation, financial circumstances, stated goals, and the coverage they already have in place.
Agents must not recommend coverage that exceeds what a client can reasonably sustain premium payments for, or that duplicates coverage already in place without clear justification.
3. Accurate representation of products
Agents must describe all insurance products accurately, completely, and without misleading omission. This includes:
- Accurately describing premiums, coverage amounts, exclusions, and limitations
- Not misrepresenting policy benefits or overstating what a policy covers
- Not making comparisons with competitor products that are false or misleading
- Disclosing all material facts about a policy before a client signs an application
- Using only approved carrier illustrations and disclosures
Misrepresentation of an insurance product is a violation of state insurance law, carrier contracts, and this Code — and may result in license suspension or revocation.
4. Compliance with state law and carrier rules
Agents must hold a valid, current life insurance producer license in every state where they conduct business or advise clients. Agents are responsible for maintaining their own license, completing continuing education requirements, and staying current with state regulatory changes.
Agents must also operate in compliance with all carrier contracts and guidelines, including anti-money-laundering (AML) training requirements, replacement regulations, and any state-specific disclosure obligations. When in doubt, agents should seek guidance from a carrier compliance representative or their state DOI before proceeding.
5. Privacy and data protection
Agents handle sensitive personal and financial information as a matter of routine. This information must be treated with the highest degree of care:
- Client information must be used only for the purpose for which it was provided
- Client data must not be shared with unauthorized third parties
- Client records must be stored and disposed of securely
- Agents must comply with all applicable privacy laws, including applicable Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act requirements
6. Professionalism and client dignity
Every client deserves to be treated with respect, patience, and honesty — regardless of their circumstances, coverage needs, or purchasing decision. Agents must:
- Treat every client with dignity and without pressure or manipulation
- Respect a client's right to take time to consider, ask questions, or decline
- Follow up honestly and without deception
- Represent the Sahlman Insurance Group name in a professional manner in all communications, on social media, and in public
- Not use high-pressure, fear-based, or manipulative sales tactics
7. No misrepresentation of income or career opportunity
When discussing the agent opportunity with prospective recruits, agents must represent the income opportunity accurately and in compliance with our earnings disclaimer:
- Do not guarantee specific income outcomes
- Do not represent your personal best results as typical or average
- Do not minimize the effort, time, and investment required to succeed
- Do not misrepresent the nature of the agent relationship (independent contractor, commission-based, not employee)
- Always direct recruits to our full earnings disclosure at /earnings-disclaimer
8. No unfair or deceptive practices
Agents must never engage in any practice that state insurance law or carrier guidelines classify as "unfair" or "deceptive." This includes, but is not limited to: twisting (inducing a client to lapse an existing policy through misrepresentation), churning (generating replacement business primarily for commissions), rebating (offering non-permitted inducements), and any form of misrepresentation or material omission in the sale or delivery of insurance products.
9. Reporting concerns
If you observe conduct by another agent or representative that appears to violate this Code, applicable law, or carrier rules, you are encouraged to report it to Sahlman Insurance Group leadership. We take compliance seriously and will not retaliate against agents who raise legitimate concerns in good faith.
10. Consequences of violations
Violations of this Code may result in termination of the agent's relationship with Sahlman Insurance Group, reporting to the relevant state Department of Insurance, and referral to carriers for investigation. Serious violations may constitute criminal conduct and may be referred to appropriate authorities. Every agent is responsible for knowing and following applicable insurance law — ignorance is not a defense.
