Term Life Insurance
Straightforward income protection when your family needs it most
Families who want strong protection for each premium dollar during their working years.
What is term life insurance?
Term life insurance is an affordable way to replace your income if the unexpected happens during your working years. You choose a coverage amount and a term length — typically 10, 20, or 30 years — and your beneficiaries receive the death benefit income-tax-free if you pass away while the policy is in force. When the term ends, the coverage ends (though many policies offer conversion options). It's simple, transparent, and purpose-built for families who want strong protection for each premium dollar.
How it works
You apply for a coverage amount based on your income, debts, mortgage, and the number of years your family would need support. After underwriting (which may include a health questionnaire or medical exam depending on the carrier and amount), you're approved at a fixed premium for the length of the term. Premiums are level — they don't increase during the term. Your beneficiaries file a claim with the carrier, and the death benefit is paid directly to them.
What Term Life Insurance offers
- Typically a lower monthly premium than permanent life insurance
- Fixed, predictable premiums for the entire term
- Death benefit paid income-tax-free to your beneficiaries
- Coverage amounts from $100,000 to several million dollars
- Many policies offer conversion to permanent coverage without re-underwriting
- Term lengths available from 10 to 30 years
Benefits vary by carrier, product type, and state of issue. Coverage is subject to underwriting and approval. Features listed are representative and may not be available on all products.

Term Life Insurance — frequently asked
How much term life insurance does my family need?
A common starting point is 10–12× your annual income, plus enough to cover your mortgage, debts, and future costs like college. Our free Coverage Calculator gives you a DIME-method estimate. A licensed Sahlman agent will help you fine-tune the number based on your full picture.
Does term life insurance build cash value?
No. Term life is pure death-benefit coverage — premiums pay for protection only, with no cash-value component. That's what keeps premiums low. If you want permanent coverage that accumulates cash value, whole life or universal life may be a better fit.
What happens when my term ends?
The policy expires and coverage stops. Depending on your carrier and policy, you may be able to renew annually (usually at higher rates), convert to permanent coverage without a new medical exam, or apply for a new policy. We'll discuss your options before your term expires.
Can I get term life insurance if I have a pre-existing health condition?
Possibly — it depends on the condition, its management, and the carrier. Because Sahlman is an independent agency, we can shop multiple carriers to find one whose underwriting guidelines best fit your health history. Apply and we'll work to find the right option for you.
