Coverage Questions

Life insurance & financial protection

Questions families most often ask before — and after — getting covered.

How much life insurance does my family actually need?

There's no single formula, but a common starting point is 10–12× your annual income. The real answer depends on your income, debts, mortgage, number of dependents, and financial goals. Our Coverage Needs Calculator gives you a personalized estimate, and a licensed Sahlman agent will walk you through the numbers — free, with no obligation.

What's the difference between term life and whole life insurance?

Term life covers you for a set period (typically 10–30 years) and pays a death benefit if you pass away during that term. It's an affordable way to get a large amount of coverage. Whole life is permanent — it doesn't expire — and builds cash value over time. Term is often the right fit during your working years when income replacement matters most; whole life works well for final expenses, estate planning, or locking in coverage for life.

Can I get life insurance on my children?

Yes. Depending on the carrier, children's whole life insurance is generally available for children as young as 14 days old up to age 17. It locks in rates based on their current health, and that coverage stays in force even if a health condition develops later, as long as premiums are paid. If you also want them to be able to add coverage as an adult without new health questions, ask about a guaranteed purchase option rider — it's usually an extra-cost add-on, capped in amount, and usable only on specific option dates, so it isn't unlimited coverage. Many parents and grandparents use it as a way to give a child a financial head start.

What is universal life insurance, and is it right for me?

Universal life is a type of permanent insurance that gives you flexibility to adjust your premium payments and death benefit as your life changes. It also builds tax-deferred cash value. It's generally best for people who want permanent coverage but need more adaptability than whole life offers — for example, if your income or financial goals may shift over time.

Do you offer annuities and retirement planning?

Yes. Sahlman offers financial-services strategies including annuities designed to provide retirement income you won't outlive. These are separate from life insurance products and involve their own structures, fees, and suitability considerations. A licensed agent can walk you through the options based on your retirement timeline and income goals.

What is accidental death insurance, and do I need it?

Accidental death insurance provides an additional benefit to your loved ones if you pass away as the result of a covered accident. It does not cover death from illness. It's typically an affordable add-on or standalone policy for people who want an extra layer of financial protection — particularly those whose work or lifestyle carries higher accidental risk.

What if I have pre-existing health conditions? Can I still get coverage?

It depends on the condition, your age, and the carrier. Some policies require a medical exam and full underwriting; others are simplified-issue or guaranteed-issue and don't require a health exam. Because Sahlman is an independent agency, we can shop multiple national life insurance carriers to find options that may work for your situation. The simplest way to find out is a free, no-obligation review.

How does the claims process work?

When a claim is filed, the beneficiary contacts the insurance carrier directly with a certified copy of the death certificate and the policy number. The carrier reviews the claim against the policy terms and, if approved, pays the death benefit. The timeline varies by carrier and policy type but typically runs a few weeks. Your agent can help guide your family through the process if needed.

Does it cost anything to get a quote or coverage review?

No. A coverage review and quote are always free and come with zero obligation. You only pay a premium if you choose to put a policy in place. Call us at (704) 312-8212, email us at Customerservice@sahlmaninsgroup.com, or use the quote form on our site.

Career Questions

Becoming a licensed insurance professional

Honest answers about what it takes to build a career in insurance with Sahlman.

Do I need experience to become an insurance agent with Sahlman?

No experience in insurance is required. Most of our agents start from scratch. We provide mentorship and coaching from day one — walking you through the licensing process, your first appointments, and the ongoing development you need to succeed. What we look for is drive, integrity, and a genuine desire to help families.

How do I get my life insurance license?

Getting licensed involves passing a state exam, submitting a background check, and applying for your license with your state's Department of Insurance — state exam and application fees typically total roughly $85–$310 across the 15 states we serve. Five of those states (Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, and New Jersey) also require a state-approved pre-licensing course first, which adds course tuition that varies by provider. The process typically takes 4–12 weeks — faster in states with no course requirement. We can point you toward approved pre-licensing resources and help you understand what your specific state requires. See our /get-licensed page for more detail.

Is this commission-based? What can I realistically earn?

Yes, insurance agent income at Sahlman is commission-based. That means there is no base salary guarantee — your income reflects the business you put in place for clients. Many agents build strong, growing income streams including renewal commissions from policies already in force. We publish an earnings disclosure at /earnings-disclaimer that gives you a realistic picture. Anyone promising guaranteed income is not being straight with you — we prefer honesty.

Is Sahlman Insurance Group an MLM?

No. Sahlman Insurance Group is an independent insurance agency. Agents earn commissions on the policies they place for clients. Team-building and developing other agents is available as a career path — but it is optional, not required to earn income. You are not required to recruit. You are not required to purchase products yourself. There are no buy-in fees, inventory requirements, or downline obligations. If you work with us, you earn by helping real families with real insurance needs.

Is this a full-time role?

Yes. Sahlman agents work full-time. Building a book of business takes consistent daily activity, and our mentorship model is built around agents who can commit to that. As an independent contractor you set your own hours, but this is meant to be your primary focus. You can get licensed before you make the switch — licensing itself doesn't require you to leave your current role first.

What does mentorship actually look like at Sahlman?

Mentorship at Sahlman isn't a video library and a login. It's coaching alongside real appointments — your manager works with you in the field (or virtually) as you develop your skills. You'll learn how to run a coverage review, how to present options to families, how to handle common objections, and how to build a sustainable practice. The S.A.H.L.M.A.N. values — including Mentorship itself — are baked into how we operate.

Income is commission-based and not guaranteed. Read our full earnings disclosure.

Which insurance carriers does Sahlman work with?

As an independent agency, Sahlman works with multiple national life insurance carriers rather than a single company.
