Permanent coverage & final expense

Whole Life Insurance

Lifelong protection and a cash value that grows with you

Who It’s For

Anyone who wants lifelong coverage or to cover funeral and end-of-life costs.

What is whole life insurance?

Whole life insurance is permanent coverage that never expires as long as you pay premiums. Unlike term life, it builds guaranteed cash value over time, and you can borrow against that value for major expenses without giving up the policy. Two things to know before you do: a policy loan accrues interest, and if you die with a loan outstanding, the balance plus that accrued interest is subtracted from the death benefit your beneficiaries receive. If the loan and its interest ever grow past your cash value, the policy can lapse. It's also the go-to solution for final expense coverage: making sure your loved ones aren't left managing funeral costs or end-of-life bills during an already-difficult time.

How it works

Your premium is fixed at the time of issue and stays level for life. A portion of each premium builds cash value inside the policy on a tax-deferred basis. The cash value grows at a guaranteed rate set by the carrier, and you can access it via loans or withdrawals. The death benefit is paid to your beneficiaries income-tax-free whenever you pass — whether that's next year or 50 years from now. Final expense policies are a simplified version with smaller face amounts and often no medical exam.

Questions

Whole Life Insurance — frequently asked

How is whole life different from term life?

Term life covers you for a set period (10–30 years) at a lower premium; whole life covers you for your entire life and builds cash value. Whole life premiums are higher because part of each payment goes toward the guaranteed cash-value account and lifelong coverage.

What can I use the cash value for?

You can take a loan against the cash value for any purpose — home repairs, college expenses, emergencies. Borrowing is generally not taxed as income while the policy stays in force. If the policy lapses or is surrendered with a loan outstanding, the gain in the policy becomes taxable — and because the loan is paid off out of your cash value, a tax bill can arrive even if you receive little or no cash. Loans from a modified endowment contract (MEC) work differently: they're taxable up to the gain in the policy when you take them, plus a 10% additional tax before age 59½. An outstanding loan plus interest also reduces the benefit paid at death. We'll tell you whether a policy is a MEC before you buy it, and your tax advisor should review any loan before you take it.

Is whole life good for final expense coverage?

Yes. Final expense whole life policies (typically $5,000–$25,000) are designed specifically to cover funeral, burial, and end-of-life costs. Many require only a health questionnaire — no medical exam — making them accessible for older applicants or those with health conditions.
