What Daily Coaching and Mentorship Actually Looks Like at Sahlman

A behind-the-scenes look at how mentorship works at Sahlman Insurance Group — what new agents experience, how coaching is delivered, and what to expect in your first weeks.

"We'll mentor you" is a phrase a lot of agencies say. But what does it actually mean day-to-day? What happens when you walk in with a shiny new license and no idea where to start?

At Sahlman Insurance Group, mentorship isn't a one-hour onboarding call. It's a hands-on, ongoing relationship built into how we work. Here's what you can actually expect.

You're Coached, Not Just Given a Login

A common complaint from new agents who've worked at other agencies: "They gave me access to the CRM and pointed me at a stack of leads. I had no idea what to do next."

We don't operate that way. When you join Sahlman, you're assigned a mentor — an experienced agent who has actually built a career doing what you're trying to do. They're your guide, your sounding board, and your shadow on early appointments.

Your mentor doesn't just answer questions when you ask them. They proactively check in, review your activity, and give you specific feedback based on what they're observing.

The First Two Weeks

Your first two weeks are structured around building the foundational skills that make every appointment better:

  • Product knowledge — understanding what you're selling well enough to explain it simply
  • Needs-based approach — how to have a discovery conversation that uncovers what a family actually needs
  • Presentation skills — how to explain a coverage recommendation clearly without confusing or overwhelming someone
  • Objection handling — how to address common hesitations honestly and without pressure

This isn't classroom learning from a slide deck. It's conversation, role-play, observation, and feedback. Your mentor may sit with you for your first appointments and debrief afterward — what went well, what to sharpen.

Ongoing Coaching Beyond Onboarding

Mentorship doesn't end after month one. Ongoing coaching at Sahlman includes:

  • Regular one-on-ones with your mentor to review activity, troubleshoot challenges, and set targets
  • Team training sessions on product updates, carrier changes, and skill development
  • Access to leadership — our agency leaders are genuinely accessible, not behind three layers of management
  • Ride-alongs and joint appointments when you're working on a complex case or want a second set of eyes

As you grow, you also have the opportunity to become a mentor yourself — developing the agents you recruit into your team.

The Culture Behind the Coaching

The S.A.H.L.M.A.N. values — Service, Accountability, Honesty, Leadership, Mentorship, Ambition, Nurture — aren't a poster on the wall. They're the lens through which we approach how we develop people.

That means coaching is honest, not just encouraging. If something isn't working, your mentor will tell you — and help you fix it. If you're struggling, the team closes in, not pulls away.

What You Bring to the Relationship

Mentorship works when the mentee shows up. What we're looking for from new agents:

  • Coachability — being willing to receive feedback and act on it
  • Consistency — showing up and doing the work, especially before results are visible
  • Integrity — representing our agency and our products honestly to every family

If you bring those things, we'll build the skills around them.
